Determining the size of your dog is not just about satisfying your curiosity; it's a crucial aspect of responsible pet ownership. Whether you're adopting a new furry friend or trying to ensure they receive the right food, exercise, care and clothing; knowing your dog's size is essential. In this article, we will explore various methods to accurately determine your dog's size.
Just like humans, dogs come in all shapes and sizes, and finding the perfect fit can be a bit of a challenge. However, with a few simple steps and some careful measurements, you can ensure that your furry friend feels comfortable and looks great in their new attire.
Finding the right size clothing was one of the biggest challenges we faced as a new dog owner – and is the sole reason we developed our Dog Membership club – so that you can record your dog’s vital statistics on our site, get a unique membership number against their registration, and we’ll help you with checking you’ve got it right when you place an order.
If you’re still unsure how to measure your dog – here’s how – the simple way;
Firstly, get a soft measuring tape, a piece of string, or download our tape measure from our sizing guide.
Measure Your Dog's Length:
This is the distance from the base of their neck (where the collar usually sits) to the base of their tail. Ensure the measuring tape lies flat against your dog's body and avoid pulling it too tightly as this can result in inaccurate measurements. Note this length in cm’s.
Measure the Chest:
This is your dog's chest circumference. This is the widest part of their chest, typically just behind their front legs. Make sure the tape measure goes all the way around their body without being too loose or too tight. Note this measurement in cm’s.
Determine the Neck Size:
To find the right size for your dog's neck, measure the circumference above their shoulders, where the collar will sit. Again, use a soft measuring tape and make sure it's not too tight or too loose. Note this measurement in cm’s.
Refer to the Sizing Chart:
Once you have your dog's measurements, refer to the sizing charts provided. Keep in mind that sizing can vary between brands, so it's essential to check the specific chart for the clothing item you're interested in. All of our sizing charts will list a range of measurements for each size, so choose the size that falls within your dog's measurements for the best fit.
And here’s the easiest bit – log all of these details against a Dog Membership, and not only will you have an easy to locate record of this information, but we’ll do our very best to send you the correct sizes, every single order.
So, knowing your dog's size is essential for various reasons, including proper nutrition, appropriate exercise, and selecting the right accessories and clothing. You can determine your dog's size through consulting breed standards, comparing to common references, seeking veterinary advice, considering age and growth factors – but most importantly through measurement for your individual pooch.
Regardless of your dog's size, remember that they are unique individuals with distinct personalities and needs. Treat them with love, care, and attention, and they will thrive as part of your family, regardless of whether they're a pint-sized Chihuahua or a giant Great Dane.
